When it comes to working with MCE, network speeds matter in two ways. First (and for those users who don t have a local area network, or LAN, with other PCs or devices at home, foremost) is the speed of your Internet connection. Second (or not, as the case may be) is the speed at which local networks carry data. In an era when numbers for household networks are exploding, and where nearly all households with PCs also have Internet access, we feel obliged to cover both sides in this book. The section that follows covers the Internet side; the section after that covers the LAN side.

When corrections for the zigzag overlap paths in the ampli er slab [40], the SBS phase conjugator re ectivity curve of Fig. 5.6, and an experimentally measured regenerative ampli er ring transmission of 90% are included in the model, good agreement is observed between the predicted and measured output energies. 5.3.4.2 Output beam quality In order to extract high-beam-quality output from the phase conjugated ampli er system, a high-quality input pulse must be provided. In ideal operation, the wavefront reversal achieved in the SBS phase conjugator allows the spatial phase distribution of the input beam to be reproduced in the ampli ed output beam. Using the previously described single-frequency selfseeded Nd:YLF oscillator, excellent seed beam quality has been measured with less than 1.1 times the diffraction limited divergence. The 25-mJ output of this oscillator, however, must be further ampli ed and anamorphically expanded to provide the *60-mJ, 8- 120-mm input to the ampli er system. The divergence of this injected pulse is increased to 1.25 times the diffraction limit in this process, primarily due to optical aberrations in the Nd:YLF preampli er. As the pulse repetition frequency of the laser system is increased, the thermal aberrations in the glass ampli er signi cantly increase output divergence when the ampli er is operated in the unidirectional uncorrected mode without the SBS phase conjugate mirror. The measured output divergence versus repetition rate is shown in
